УЛОГАТА НА ВОДАТА ВО МАКЕДОНСКИТЕ НАРОДНИ ВЕРУВАЊА И ОБРЕДИ
SUMMARY: THE ROLE OF WATER IN MACEDONIAN PEOPLE’S BELIEFS AND RITUALS
Водата зазема важно место во македонските народни верувања и обреди. Таа очистува, напојува, освежува, ја ублажува жегата, го условува развојот на растенијата и има големо хигиенско значење. Во трудот се зборува за светите, лековитите и самовилски води, за т.н. жива вода, за нејзината улога при изведување на обредите од животниот и годишниот циклус на човекот во Македонија.
The paper discusses the water and its place in Macedonian folk beliefs and rituals. A special place in the Macedonian beliefs related to the water is occupied by healing springs and waters that most often can be found on the territory of Macedonia such as: Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, holy waters, etc. Besides the healers in the people, there are also known so-called Fairy water, Fairy Springs, Samovilec etc. These waters, thanks to their medical properties, treat all kinds of diseases. People often come to these sources to cure the following diseases: from spells and their spreading, from bad eyes, from curses, from grief, fear, hatred, taking, charms, and similar phenomena. They visit them on different days, on holidays, they donate money, they put pieces of clothing and other items, and these water with its purifying, health and fertilizing functions has risen to the level of a cult.
Water is present in the rituals performed during the holidays Vasilitsa, Vodici, Ivanden (Ivanka, Tajane bane) and Gjurgjovden, which are performed and maintained the population in Macedonia. In the Macedonian ritual practice during the great droughts, the ritual is performed as a butterfly, dudule, vayvule, bale, glaze, etc., to cause rain. Besides this ritual, the custom baptizing was performed. It is a spring agrarian custom, and besides this name, this custom can also be found with the following names: Crosses, Crusaders, Littias, Bogomols and the like. It is performed in the period from Easter to the St. Peter’s fast.
Water as one of the essential ingredients of living things, heals and fertilizes, but on the other hand is capable of inflicting great harm and accidents on man. At any moment it can show its destructive power, it can endanger and destroy life, ruin the material goods of man, destroy the land of the field, and so on. For that purpose, the population respects certain days of the year, but also undertakes various prophylactic magical measures and rituals to deter dark clouds and protect them from the city.
At the end, we can conclude that the water has a very important place in the Macedonian folk beliefs and rituals. Therefore, the water has a great significance for the life of the people in Macedonia. The rain, the springs, the wells, the rivers and other water areas were praised and still respected, where different sacrifices were offered and various other ritual activities were performed in order to bring water, health and fertility to the water.
